MET GALA AND COMMES DES GARCONS

MET BALL HONORS REI KAWAKUBO

The 2017 Metropolitan Museum of Art Annual Costume Institute exhibition aka the Met Gala brought it this year. The theme was a celebration of Japanese creative genius Rei Kawakubo. She is the mastermind of Commes des Garçons. The label’s slogan is “Wear your Freedom”.  She is the first living subject to be the Met Gala’s theme since 1983’s Yves Saint Laurent.

Costume Institute’s curator in charge, Andrew Bolton has stated,”Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.’

With Kawakubo’s brilliant mind, unusual experiments with fabric, and creativity that has pushed fashion boundaries for decades we knew the Met Gala would be wild in a good way this year.

Below I picked my faves for this year’s Met Gala. When choosing these looks I looked to those who embodied the theme of the Gala to a tee and celebrated the Avant Garde.
