Everything you need to know; this week’s must reads and more!

1. Feeling The Blues
Democrats picked up a W in another special election this week (PA-18). It’s further proof that the potential for a blue wave in the November midterms is very, very real. Thank goodness. -M (NY Times)

2. The Woman Behind SXSW
An unknown name behind the powerhouse SXSW festival. This woman has been the behind the scenes workhorse of SXSW for 10 years. Read about how she did it and how she continues to make it great. -B (Vanity Fair)

3. Pinching Pennies
In an exercise that was equal parts motivating (#girlboss #goals) and soul-crushing (for obvious reasons), I scrolled through this updated list of the world’s billionaires. -M (Forbes)

5. Unimaginable Genius
Physicist Stephen Hawking died this week at the age of 76. He was more than just a scientist though, he was a cultural icon who tried to make the cosmos accessible to the masses. -M (New Yorker)

7. Party in the USA
This piece really resonated with me. As an American (with Puerto Rican roots), I always feel a little weird about celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco De Mayo, and other cultural holidays. When I say celebrate, I am referring to when that translates into an excuse to get shit faced without any knowledge of what the tradition means; or wanders into cultural appropriation territory. -B (NPR)

*On an slightly off topic yet relatable note, I attended a Cinco de Mayo party at my undergrad in Virginia. This was hosted by a roommate’s new boyfriend. The hosts were white students (which is fine), but I was the only Latina there. Cue three guys entering the room dressed as border patrol wearing foundation as brown face. I became very uncomfortable. My roommate (who I went to the party with) proceeded to jokingly tell them my ethnicity. Not sure why it was a joke, but okay. Then these guys pretended to lasso me and take me to “Mexican Whore Jail” as they lovingly named it. Yep…one of the worst and traumatic moments of my life. I left immediately, and pretty much hated my roommate and her friends after that. -B

8. Hail To The Women
It’s International Women’s Month so let’s not forget the Latinas who built the ladders enabling us to break that glass ceiling.
Here’s a list of 22 badass Latin American women throughout history. (Buzzfeed)
Here’s a list of the 50 most powerful Latinas in business. (Fortune)

9. Bad Policy
Apparently you can get banned from making returns at Sephora. Not a good look, especially when Sephora sales associates talk up their return policy and encourage shoppers to buy products and test them out at home. -M (Racked)

10. All Marvel, All The Time
The final trailer for Avengers: Infinity Wars dropped today and it is action packed. This movie looks SO DAMN GOOD! Pre-sale tickets also went on sale today. If you’re trying to catch this movie opening weekend, get a move on. Tickets are going fast! -M (Fandango)
