SUMMER COCKTAIL SERIES: MINT LIMEADE

It is officially the start of summer 2018! What better way to kick off the season with a repost of last years favorite poolside cocktail.

I wanted to create a refreshing cocktail to sip for back porch evenings and barbecues.
I love making limeade infused with mint. My kids love it and it pairs great with bourbon.

So Mila came over one night and we tested out this recipe until it was perfection and we were a bit tipsy.
Cheers!

Making the Limeade:
Serves 8:

1. With a hand held citrus juicer squeeze the juice of 8-10 lemons and 8-10 limes into a full size pitcher. Trader Joe’s sells bags of organic lemons and limes for super cheap. I believe all of these shown were under $6.
2. Stir in 1 cup of simple syrup. You can make simple syrup by mixing one cup of sugar and water in a sauce pan. Cook on medium stirring frequently until all sugar is dissolved.
3. Fill the rest of the pitcher with water.
4. Add mint leaves to your liking. I grow mint in my garden every year. I love how fast this grows, how hearty it is, and Ive found it does not wilt easily. Also, I use a diffuser pitcher so if my mint leaves get soggy I can easily take them out.
5. Chill for 2 hours. This lets the flavors really set.

The great thing about this recipe is you can tweak this to your liking. If you want a limeade that is more tart add more lemons and limes. If you prefer a more sweet lemonade add more simple syrup or a touch of honey.

You can of course purchase lemon or limeade from the store, but if you like to make it at home this is my favorite recipe for sweet and tart. Also, I prefer to make it because I can control the sugar content.

Making the Cocktail:
Seves 1:

1. In a stemless wine glass add sliced lemons and limes along with torn mint leaves. Muddle in glass (seen left). Add ice.
2. Pour in 3 parts limeade
3. Add 1 and 1/2 parts chilled bourbon. I prefer Basil Haydens and that is what we used for this cocktail.
4. Top off with a splash of ginger ale.
5. Add fresh mint leaves for garnish.
Enjoy!
