WHY I WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERY DAY

I’m very fortunate that my mother started emphasizing the importance of good skincare at a very young age. And of all the different products she tried, of all her different skincare routines I watched as a kid, the one constant was sunscreen. Keep in mind, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, so the fact that my mom is so dedicated to wearing sunscreen every. single. day. is something I didn’t fully appreciate when I was younger. I mean the PNW isn’t exactly the kind of place with 300+ days of sun per year. So thanks to her diligence and commitment to good skincare, I can honestly say I’ve worn sunscreen almost every single day since I was a teenager.

Okay, but why is it so important to wear SPF every day? Good question! Sunscreen protects our skin from ultraviolet rays from the sun. Damage from those UVA and UVB rays can cause sunburns, premature signs of aging (like fine lines, wrinkles, and sun spots, no thanks) and can increase risk of skin cancer. With all that on the line, it should be such a no-brainer to find a way to incorporate SPF into your daily skincare routine.

I know wearing sunscreen is definitely a preventive measure and it might feel like you’ll have to wait an eternity for the payoff, but just think, have you ever heard someone say “wow I wish I hadn’t worn SPF for the last 20 years!” – probably not. And with so many great sunscreens on the market these days, there are really no good excuses anymore.

Now let’s talk products. Typically, sunscreen goes over moisturizer and under makeup so I generally prefer a chemical sunscreen for sheer ease of use and blendability for every day.  That said, I definitely break out the heavy duty zinc for outdoor activities! Anyway, I’m currently on my third bottle of Glossier’s Invisible Shield (totally loving it right now), but here are a few more of my fave sunscreens that are perfect for every day use.

If the idea of adding another product to your morning skincare routine seriously stresses you out, here are a few great moisturizers, tinted moisturizers, and primers that will still have you covered.
